FOET with EBS – OPITO

Course Purpose

The FOET with EBS course is designed to provide periodic refresher training for offshore personnel who already hold a valid OPITO-approved BOSIET or T-BOSIET certificate.

Course Structure

The course includes theoretical and practical training covering the actions to be taken in the event of an offshore emergency or a helicopter emergency, with particular emphasis on sea survival and rescue techniques, emergency first aid, firefighting, self-rescue and evacuation, in accordance with OPITO standards.

The course is delivered in Italian and, upon request, in English.

FOET with EBS Course Programme

HELICOPTER SAFETY AND ESCAPE

Theoretical Training

• Features and operation of the Emergency Breathing System (EBS)
• Principles of use of the Emergency Breathing System
• EBS breathing duration
• Dynamic buoyancy associated with the EBS
• Use of the Personal Locator Beacon (PLB)

Practical Training

• Wearing a helicopter transit suit, aviation life jacket and Emergency Breathing System, and carrying out EBS integrity checks
• Deploying, operating and breathing from an EBS in dry conditions
• Deploying, operating and breathing from an EBS in a swimming pool using the participant’s own exhaled air before completing the HUET exercises
• Breathing from the EBS in positive and negative body orientations created by positioning and tilting the body in the water
• Actions to be taken in preparation for a ditching
• Actions following a controlled ditching, including deploying the EBS and, following instructions from the aircrew, removing a push-out window and evacuating through a designated exit onto an aviation life raft
• Assisting, where practicable, with the initial actions required after boarding an aviation life raft, including securing painter lines, deploying the sea anchor, erecting the canopy and maintaining the raft, as well as carrying out secondary actions such as assigning a lookout, activating the radio beacon and using the first aid kit
• Underwater evacuation through a window following partial helicopter submersion:
  • With deployment, operation and use of the EBS, without removing the window
  • With deployment, operation and use of the EBS, including window removal
• Underwater evacuation through a window following helicopter capsize:
  • With the EBS deployed and operated at the surface before capsize, including window removal
• Inflating an aviation life jacket and deploying the spray visor in the water
• Water survival procedures, including individual and group survival techniques: swimming, maintaining position in the water, towing and forming a human chain
• Boarding an aviation life raft from the water
• Being recovered using one of the recognised offshore recovery methods

FIREFIGHTING AND SELF-RESCUE

Theoretical and Practical Training

• Operating the alarm system upon discovering a fire
• Using different types of fire extinguisher on Class A and Class B fires
• Individual and group self-rescue techniques for evacuating areas affected by smoke and heat, with and without a smoke hood, in reduced-visibility and zero-visibility conditions

EMERGENCY FIRST AID

Theoretical Training

• First aid management
• Types of injury, including bleeding, burns and chemical exposure
• Prioritising casualties
• Immediate first aid actions before the arrival of the medic or trained first aider, including:
  • Assessing the situation
  • Securing the area
  • Assessing all casualties
  • Prioritising unconscious casualties
  • Calling for assistance as quickly as possible

Practical Training

• Raising the alarm
• Assessing the situation and checking the safety of the area
• Checking the airway, breathing and circulation
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• Recovery position, for demonstration purposes only

Certification Requirements

Participants must hold one of the following valid OPITO-approved certificates:

• BOSIET or T-BOSIET
• FOET or T-FOET

Medical Requirements

Participants must hold either:

• A valid offshore medical certificate, or
• A valid medical certificate confirming fitness to participate in the course

Upon successful completion of all theoretical and practical assessments, participants will receive an OPITO-approved Further Offshore Emergency Training with EBS – FOET certificate.
